Strutting on the Yard: Is college one huge fashion show?

Real Thoughts from your Average Chick

Strutting on the Yard: Is college one huge fashion show?
That moment that we all dread, we all knew was soon to come.
Those eight hours of sleep you planned on getting the night before, were short lived the moment your alarm went off.
Immediately you, “Hop up out the bed, turn your swag on, take a look in the mirror and say what’s up.”
Many students anticipate the first day of school for one reason in particular; showing off their first day of school outfit. This is the one day that people pull out their best garments that they may have purchased over the summer to show off for this specific day.
Unlike most students who look forward to their “first day of school” outfit, students at the University of MD Eastern Shore take it to an entirely new level. Not only are students stepping out in their best get up the first day of school, but the entire week you can tell that many students put a lot of thought and time into their outfit. The ladies fill the yard with their “Litas”, a popular platform shoe by Jeffrey Campbell and a plethora of several other platforms tower the campus. The fellas color the campus with their fresh kicks and fly snapbacks. While I walk across the yard to class and check out the amount of fashion sense divided about the campus I had to stop and ask myself, is college merely just one huge fashion show?
Some students may think it’s absurd to wear their most expensive pair of shoes and favorite shirt to just sit in a classroom to listen to a teacher lecture.  I have heard students throughout my years at UMES say that they rather save their best clothes for something special and just throw on some sweats to go to class, whereas I have heard others say they feel their best when they are dressed their best. I myself have my days when I want to get dressed up and it could just be a Monday, but I also have my days when I just want to be comfortable in some sweats and a hoodie. In the end it all comes down to that person and what makes them happy.
The yard may be viewed to some as a runway and as they walk to class they may enjoy envisioning themselves on the catwalk.  I personally believe that when a person puts thought and effort into how they look, not only does it reflect off of them physically, but it also shows through their attitude. Although the student population enjoys strutting around in the latest trends on campus, it shouldn’t be a competition and for many it is. We need to begin uplifting and complementing one another around campus. Not just females, but males as well love to hate on the next person, when the truth is we really envy them. I have been around females who have said, “Oh, she’s pretty.” Or “Her outfit is cute.”, but wouldn’t dare say it out loud for the person to hear. I never understood why that is. You should always give credit where credit is due.
Whether you’re wearing the newest foams or have a Marc Jacobs bag on your shoulder, at the end of the day we all want to look our best. The yard isn’t just a place for gathering and the hallways aren’t just a place for walking to class anymore. We’re on the runway of success, but we rather do it in style. UMES students love to look their best and it shows throughout the campus.
Next time you see someone on the yard who you think looks nice or has on those pair of shoes you want so bad, let them know. It might just make their day and yours as well.
Keep strutting UMES !
